I cut letters in stone by hand (with a letter cutter’s dummy – a round mallet – and a selection of chisels. No sandblasting here). I usually work in slate or limestone, sometimes marble or beach pebbles. Much of the stone I use is reclaimed or found – either from architectural salvage, out of skips, or picked up from a beach! Most of the letters I cut are “v-cut” – in the tradition started by the Romans, although I do sometimes do raised lettering as well.
On this site you can see various posts of different projects that I’ve worked on – each page often includes some ‘work in progress’ shots, so you can see how things have developed. It is always a time consuming process.
Sometimes I paint or gild them, as letters cut in stone often only look their best in early morning or late evening as the low sun falls across them. Letters cut in slate should be painted if going outside, as they will disappear (temporarily) when it rains.
I hope that you enjoy it!
